Overview

Our Program  has long been the leading centre of research in contemporary culture at ELTE University, Faculty of Humanities. Faculty members of the Art Theory and Media Institute, which hosts the Program, are outstanding representatives of Hungarian film and media studies who, apart from academic research,  take an active part in the practical sides of their respective professions. The traditional fields  of research like the history of film/television, theories of genres or the history of audiences are paired up in the core of studies by contemporary cultural studies and recent theories of visuality. The social embedding of the processes through which culture constitutes meaning or the political context of the technologies which produce and reproduce knowledge are of focal interest for the Program.

The Program is also committed to thinking across boundaries of disciplines in researching contemporary culture.

According to the traditions of ELTE Faculty of Humanities the Program is  fondly  dedicated to the textual and aesthetic aspects of film and media, connecting these approaches seamlessly to the research on the production, technologies and control of analogical and digital contents. Apart from the classic aspects of reception our Program researches the  usage  and consumption of contemporary culture as well. The Program maintains external academic relations and partnerships with the leading Hungarian centres of similar profiles and plans long-term collaborations with universities of distinction.

Our dedication is to focus on the intensive collaboration of faculty and students as the key element of our educational-research work.
